Summer Activities

Week 1:
Today, I watched the trailer and behind the scenes of a new movie called Splice. Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, and Delphine Chanèac are the main characters in this film. Clive and Elsa are partners in their lab. These two scientists are specialized in genetic engineering. They transform and combine animal DNA to create new species. Their ambition made them want to try to experiment with human DNA but the people who support them said no. But this did not stop them. They secretly conduct their experiments. As a result they create Dren, a genetically mutated creature that is intelligent and has incredible physical traits. But this may result in a threat to both Clive and Elsa. I also watched how the actors and the producers felt about the movie and their personal opinions.

Week 2:
This week, I watched a very interesting movie called Invictus. This movie dates back to the 1990's where the Apartheid was being erradicated by Nelson Mandela. Mandela, had recently gone out of jail and won the upcoming elections. Mandela's major concern is bringing South Africa together. He realizes how rugby can unite this country since everyone sees it and enjoys it. He then puts all his efforts and time into the Springboks, the national rugby team. The World Cup was in South Africa and people did not give the national team a chance, not even the South Africans. Only Mandela thought it was possible. He met with François Pienaar, the captain of the national team and told him how to be inspired and how to lead his team into winning the world cup. As the World Cup was getting closer, Mandela made the team be a symbol of union between South Africans. The World Cup arrives and South Africa win against Australia at the opening. As they win games, the people get more united and the advance into semi-finals against France. They win and proceed to a tough match against New Zealand. As this occurs, black and white people gather to watch the game and celebrate together. They win the World Cup and this makes South Africa more united. Mandela's plan worked out wonderfully, as he made possible what seemed impossible.

Week 3:

This week, I read an article called “Sponsors desert France as Sarkozy and Zidane chastise players” in Yahoo. This article is about the instability of the French soccer team. The French team lost against Mexico 2-0 and Nicolas Anelka, a French striker, insulted the French coach. This resulted in a series of problems and Anelka being expelled from the concentration in South Africa. The article explains how the players gave a note to the coach saying they would not train and maybe would not play their last game against the hosts. It also states the opinions of many journals back in France like L’Equipe. Other people talked like president Sarkozy and former French star, Zinedine Zidane. Many sponsors of the team have backed down and they are no longer sponsors. Even some sponsors removed Anelka completely from their propaganda. Media have expressed themselves with fury as well as great figures of the French community.

Week 4:
This week I saw a movie called The Orphan. Kate and John had just lost their third child in a tragic way. They passed many weeks in depression, especially Kate. Then they decided that the best way to overcome this tragedy was adopting a child. They traveled into a foster home and were trying to find the perfect child. John starts talking to this girl named Esther and finally they take her home. Esther fits well into the family but does not fit well in school. She reacts violently towards a girl who had been bothering her. Kate starts to doubt about the girl’s real attitude. As a result she calls Sister Abigail, who took care of Esther, and they talked about it. Esther then murders Sister Abigail. Esther then makes an attempt to kill Maxine and Daniel, John and Kate’s children. Kate was researching about her and then she is told that Esther is 33 years old and she is not psychologically well. When she is told this, Esther is trying to seduce John and John rejects her. Esther then reacts with anger and goes to kill John and Maxine. Kate was at the hospital and so was Daniel. Before Kate can make it, Esther stabs John multiple times. She then goes for Maxine, but Kate gets there. They start to fight and then Kate kills Esther.

Hitler’s Third Reich was at its top and many of the Allies were planning a way to bring it down. Lieutenant Aldo Raine, a Jewish-American, builds up a team of Jewish-Americans to bring down the Nazi Empire. He asks them for 100 Nazi scalps given to him. Also, there is a Jewish girl named Shoshanna who wants revenge for the murder of her family when she was little. She owns a cinema and she is forced to hold a Nazi premiere. She first does not agree but then realizes that is a perfect chance to get her revenge. She plans to burn all her films down with the cinema. The Bastards plan to bring a bomb to the premiere. Their plan does not go as planned but they are saved by Shoshanna’s plan. Then they go on and killed Hitler as the cinema burns down. Shoshanna is murdered by a Nazi official.

Week 6:
This week I saw a movie called Shutter Island. Shutter Island is a movie that takes place entirely in an island where a mental institute is. Marshalls Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule are investigating a missing patient in the institute called Rachel Solando. As they get to the institute they meet the head psychiatrist, Dr. Cawley. He lets the Marshalls examine the institute, but they cannot see the files, just interview the patients and the personnel. In the institute Teddy sees her dead wife and she tells her that Rachel Solando is in the institute and also her murderer, Andrew Laeddis. They find Rachel, who mistakes Teddy as her dead husband. Teddy starts to have migraines and hallucinations. He then heads to a lighthouse and in a cave he finds a woman that says to be Rachel Solando and that she was forced to be put to experiments. Then he enters the lighthouse and finds Dr. Cawley. Dr. Cawley reveals to him that he is Andrew Laeddis, and he is a patient in the institute. He was in the institute because he killed his wife, soon after she killed their children. Also, Chuck tells him he is a doctor, Dr. Sheehan. They tell him he lives in a fantasy and they try to show him the truth and to make him live in it. It did not work so he was then locked up for his own sake.
